This intensive 3-day workshop to be held at the Surrey Art Gallery, led by acclaimed Alberta ceramicist Les Manning is designed to concentrate on form, from the minimal nature of a horizontal plate to the abstract quality of a bowl and the vertical character of the vessel, to find distinct statements in edges and volume that bring these three disparate objects into a recognizable family of forms.
We tend to think of these objects in a singular manner, so the challenge is to create a complimentary signature in form that unites the end result.
The workshop will include a combination of lectures, step by step demonstrations and group discussions. Participants will be able to develop a set of simple resolutions to complex problems. Previous throwing experience is required.
9am–4pm each day, with a lunch break from Noon–1pm
Day 1- The history of bowls, plates and vessels will be reviewed followed by step by step demonstrations of these items.
Day 2- Work through the techniques shown on day 1 at your own pace, including one to one advice from the instructor.
Day 3- In the morning complete any pieces started the previous day. In the afternoon, have the opportunity to discuss your work and your experience in the workshop with other participants.
Les Manning is Senior Artist in Residence for the Medalta International Artist in Residence Program
at the Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics in the Medicine Hat Clay Industries
National Historic District of Alberta. A ceramic artist for 40 years, his work focuses on the interpretation
of the Canadian Rocky Mountain landscape, where he has lived for 25 years. His wheel thrown and altered forms capture the abstract qualities of this environment. These works have been exhibited worldwide. Les recently presented a workshop in Israel; this was the 46th country in which he has presented ceramic related activities.
